How you would curate your social media with a critical public audience.

In order to avoid unnecessary conflicts, we should try to display valid personal information (not necessarily the real identity) in PLN, because information with transparency can avoid ineffective discussions and disputes caused by misunderstanding.

Identify the risks and benefits of engaging with a public audience in a media space Consider what the risks for a public figure or person in a position of trust (educator, lawyer, government official) may be?

Due to the high level of attention public figures receive in reality and online, and the fact that social media can amplify their missteps. That’s why they have to regulate their behaviour and speech more than ordinary people. On the other hand, public figures face far more security risks to their privacy than ordinary people, as any leakage of their privacy may cause incalculable damage or even put their lives at risk.

How to best address negative replies and critiques reflective of your personal values and employer’s social media policy?

First and foremost, we need to respond to negative comments in a timely manner in order to demonstrate a proactive and positive approach to solving problems. Avoid verbally attacking the person who made the negative comment and don’t change your point of view so easily in order to avoid escalating the conflict. If necessary, ask your employer how to solve the problem effectively.

Open dialogues about media literacy and factual information can create conflict, why does this happen?

Because everyone has their own opinion about public information and news, and everyone’s values will be different to a greater or lesser extent. The existence of information bias leads to the fact that each person processes information in a different way, and it is very easy for conflicts to arise when two parties discuss the different points of view caused by information bias. On the other hand, conflicts due to a lack of media literacy are not uncommon.

What is the benefit of having a PLN that values media literacy?

I think PLNs with good media literacy are very beneficial for professional or career development because good media literacy increases the viewer’s favorability and trust, in which case people are usually more inclined to participate in discussions or share their views and comments in PLNs.

Do you think that some people don’t share all of their thinking on a PLN because they are afraid about how they may look? Do you think that some people prefer to share anonymously? Or do you think that most people are happy either way?

Hello Shalan.Thank you for your comment, it is true that a lot of people choose to comment anonymously or not post their thoughts on social media, the reasons that lead them to do so I think are the following:
1. protecting their personal privacy.
2. verbal attacks due to social media that are not fully inclusive.
3. dislike of expression.
I don’t think I need to explain too much about the first and second points, it happens every day on social media and PLN. Regarding the third point, I don’t think everyone likes to share and is good at it, and I can’t look at dislike of expression as a social flaw because everyone is different, so dislike of expression can’t be recognized as a flaw in a person. On the other hand, some people will comment publicly or anonymously based on what others share, depending on what the poster shares.
